Smooth Pursuit Eye Exercise Setup & Preparation
Smooth pursuit exercises train the eyes to follow moving targets smoothly and accurately. They’re prescribed for patients with tracking difficulties, convergence insufficiency, or to improve reading fluency.
- Environment
- Sit in a quiet, well-lit room with minimal distractions.
- Position your computer or tablet at eye level, about 40 cm (16 in) away.
- Equipment
- Use a stable chair and desk—avoid holding the device in your hands.
- If you wear glasses or contacts for near work, keep them on.
- Follow the Target
Keep your head as still as possible.
Move only your eyes to smoothly track the dot as it travels in a straight line, then reverses direction.
Maintain Clear Focus
If the dot becomes blurry, blink and refocus before continuing.
If you lose the target, pause briefly, find it again, then pick up where you left off.
Complete a Set
One set consists of the dot moving back-and-forth 10 times (or as prescribed).
After a set, take a 15–30 second break—rest your eyes by looking into the distance.
Tracking Progress
- Journal: Note the date, how many back-and-forth cycles you completed, and any discomfort.
- Difficulty Rating: On a scale of 1–10, rate how easy it was to keep the dot in clear focus.
- Weekly Review: Compare your ratings over time—improvement should look like fewer tracking “breaks” and lower difficulty ratings.
- Mild eye fatigue is normal. If you experience pain or headaches, stop and consult your clinician.
